random thoughts

Economics by Dr. Gregory Mankiw

"Whereas politics seemed vague, rambling and subjective, science was analytic, systematic and objective. Economics therefore combines the virtues of politics and science."
"Labor market, like all markets, is subject to the forces of supply and demand."
"An economy's income is the economy's output."
"Can good news for farming be bad news for farmers?"
"Workers unemployed for many months are most likely to suffer economic and psychological hardship."
"The principle of comparative advantage shows that trade can make everyone better off."
"Suppose that the world's fastest typist happens to be trained in brain surgery. Should he do his own typing or hire a secretary?"
"Determinants of productivity: physical capital, human capital, natural resources, and technological knowledge."

Announcements

  • Dr. Ed Villegas (Devstud Program's academic coordinator & Ibon Foundation president) will deliver a lecture to DSS faculty about the political economy of culture on June 22. • Student organizations sponsoring any issue-based symposium/forum may invite my NSTP CWTS students to attend (as delegate) and/or participate (as reactor). Please inform me about the topic, program, date and venue ahead of time for purposes of documentation. May I underscore that the my approval largely depends on their availability and relevance of the subject matter. Just this semester, I instituted a system to account/document the co-curricular activities of my NSTP students. They are required to attend at least 10 socially relevant symposia/fora per semester. A representative of the sponsoring organization is requested to countersign the tracking form of my students for purposes of validation/checking.

social cost

Quoted from a photo caption by Reuters
"Call center workers gather in a bar after an overnight shift in Makati.
Booming outsourcing industry is generating thousands of jobs
and billions of dollars in revenues but many of its young employees are
turning to caffeine, cigarettes and alcohol to deal with unsociable hours
and demanding, and sometimes abusive callers."
