(Un)democratic short-list

The Dec. 22 Inquirer editorial put it succinctly when it described the upcoming 2010 poll as a "crowded field of equal-strength presidential candidates", referring presumably to Noli, Erap, Manny, Chiz, Loren, Ping and Mar. The elite-oriented Philippine politico-administrative system accustoms the electorates to limit their choice from the pre-determined short-list of contenders provided by the society's power-wielders. This explains why "none of them" got the highest rating (76 out of 291 total votes) among the UP respondents in Diwang Palaboy's online survey on presidential elections.

BAD

The Arroyo government is the embodiment of everything BAD:

extrajudicial killings and other human rights violations
political repression
development aggression
poll fraud
fraud-laden big ticket contracts
patronage and dynastic politics
lies and cover-up
abuse of authority
shameless bid to stay in power

  • cremains = cremated remains
  • risk = threat + vulnerability
  • Gilbert Remulla = spokesperson of Villar's Nacionalista Party
  • EJK = extrajudicial killings = EJE = extrajudicial executions
  • Obamanomics = Economically, Obamanomics represents a belief in the need for governments to stimulate their economies with spending increases and tax cuts paid for by increases in borrowing. Politically, it means a belief in big government and an emphasis on what politicians of the center-left call fairness - as illustrated by promises to make the rich pay more tax (Source: Nick Robinson).

Heavyweight boxing

Integrative medicine = biomedicine + ethnomedicine

Lampas isang linggong masama ang pakiramdam ko.

  • malunggay tea
  • salabat
  • saline gargle
  • Vita-Plus
  • water therapy

Replicability

We need to replicate this in other parts of the archipelago.

Political Economy of Global Citizen by Eric Napeñas*

Usually the global citizen concept is used to diminish patriotism
in exchange for globalism - a veil for global capitalist ends.

Thus the only real substitute for patriotism is not the higher importance of the entire world, but the higher purpose of upholding human rights vis-a-vis when one's own country is in the wrong.

I am reminded of the great American humorist Mark Twain when he chose to be a "traitor" to his country in support of the more righteous cause of fighting U.S. imperialism.
