Thesis topic

In my undergraduate years and just like any other student, I was confronted with the difficult decision of choosing a viable thesis topic.  Initially, I had three general topics in mind, namely: senior citizen welfare and concern, protected areas management, and municipal fisherfolks situationer and struggle - all of which in the context of Cavite experience and to be viewed from the lens of critical political economy. After serious consideration, I ended up with the last topic with the conviction that it will complement my critical understanding of the other two basic sectors (peasant and indigenous people), which I gained from my previous DS and PS courses and field work experience.  The research result reiterated the fact that the marginalization, underdevelopment and disempowerment of the basic sectors in the Philippine society are direct offshoots of the twin assault of foreign and local bourgeois exploitation and abuse.

Dugtungan

It was a productive and an enlightening Wednesday.
In the morning, we attended a forum organized by the union alliance about the issues and concerns that surround the latest round of UP Merit Promotion.
In the afternoon, we joined the premembership education seminar of the PGH Bayanihan Multipurpose Cooperative that covers its history, principles and by-laws. 
Late in the afternoon, we screened the shiftees and transferees to our respective degree programs in the department.

Salimbayan

TUGON AT PANANAGUTAN NG PROGRAMA NG ARALING PANGKAUNLARAN

Tinituluhang "Salimbayan" ang ating gawain ngayong araw dahil sa paniniwala na mahalagang magkatuwang ang mga kilusang masa, institusyong pampananaliksik at akademya sa kritikal na layuning bumuo ng isang lipunang nakabatay sa katarungan, kalayaan, at likas-kayang kaunlaran.  At isa sa mahalagang sangkap upang makamit ito ay sa pamamagitan ng isang uri ng edukasyon na makamasa, siyentipiko, makabansa at makapamayanan.

Sentral sa lahat ng layuning ito ay ang pananagutan ng pamantasan sa mga mamamayang pinaglilingkuran nito.  Kritikal ang gampanin ng pamantasan na maging isang kontra-pwersa o kontra-daluyong sa isang lipunang sinalanta at sinasalanta ng sabwatang dayuhan at lokal na mananamantala sa mga sakahan, pangisdaan, kabundukan, pagawaan, kalunsuran, pamantasan at maging sa cyberworld.

Partikular na kinikilala ng Programa ng Araling Pangkaunlaran ang makabuluhang papel ng mga abanteng pwersa mula sa hanay ng batayang sektor bilang kaakibat ng pamantasan sa hangaring makapaglatag at/o mapalakas ang pampamayanang oryentasyon ng kurikulum,  maging makabuluhan ang adyendang pampananaliksik at maging mahigpit ang integrasyon at koordinasyon  ng mga pampublikong serbisyo sa UP  upang ang Pamantasan ng Pilipinas ay maging tunay na Pamantasan ng Bayan.

Ang mga natipong kaalaman, pagkilala, puna, opinyon, at mungkahi ukol sa Programa at bumubuo rito mula sa ating naging gawain ngayong araw ay magsisilbing lunsaran namin upang repasuhin ang kasalukuyang kurikulum at bumalangkas ng isang mas malalim, mas matalas at mas kritikal na alternatibong babangga sa namamayaning makakanluran, makasarili, makakorporasyon at atrasadong sistema at diskurso ng kurunungan at edukasyon.  Sasaklawin ng prosesong ito ang pagpapayaman sa lalamanin ng kurso (content), paraan ng pagtuturo (pedagogy) at pagtukoy ng mga mapagpalayang adyendang pampapapanaliksik.  Salimbayan ding aaralin sa klase ang mga nananaig at kakontra nitong diskurso, sistema at programa at mula sa dialektikal na prosesong ito ay hahantong sa pagbuo ng lapat, buo at alternatibong katumbas. Mahalaga ring maiugnay ang pakikibaka ng mga mamamayang masa sa Pilipinas sa mga kapwa nila nasa laylayan ng lipunan sa ibang panig ng daigdig.

Patuloy na babalikwas ang kurso sa tradisyunal na kaayusan sa pamamagitan ng paglalatag ng kritikal na dulog sa pag-aaral ng iba't ibang larangan kagaya ng critical development theory, critical political studies, critical political economy, critical government accounting, critical human resource development, critical migration studies, critical cultural studies, critical ethnography, critical development research, critical industry analysis, critical peasant studies, critical China studies, critical media analysis at iba pa.

Higit na pag-iibayuhin ng kaguruan ang pagpapanday ng kanilang kolektibong kasanayan sa pagtuturo, pananaliksik at serbisyo publiko na kasalimbayan ang kanilang mag-aaral.  Kapwa rin kinikilala ng Programa ang napakalaking potensyal ng mga estudyante ng kurso sa kilusang pagbabago sa loob at labas ng pamantasan.  Katuwang ang isa't isa ay higit naming lilinangin ang kakayahan ng mga mag-aaral sa larangan ng pagsusuri, pagsusulat, pagsasalin, pananaliksik (kalitatibo, kantitatibo at salimbayan nito), popularisasyon at pagsasapubliko ng kaalaman, pagtatalumpati, pakikipagtalastasan, pagtatanghal at pakikipamuhay upang maging epektibo, responsable, sensitibo at etikal na manggagawang pangkaunlaran (development worker) sa hinaharap.

Matayog ang hangarin ng Salimbayan 2014 subalit buo ang tiwala natin sa ikatatagumpay nito.
Patuloy tayong tutukoy ng iba pang larangan at oportunidad ng pagtutulungan at pagkakaisa tungo sa kaganapan ng praxis ng panlipunang pagbabago.
Pinakamataas na pagpupugay sa mga mag-aaral ng lipunan at ahente ng ekonomyang politikal na transpormasyon.

#miriammagic (updated)

Miriam arrived an hour and a half late in a speaking engagement organized by a sorority way back in the late 90's at UP Manila. The senator hurriedly went up the LT stage, gave a quick glance at her audience and, with full confidence, she remarked "I am worth the wait." Everyone burst into laughter and in complete agreement.  This was before the era of the legislator's famous barrage of pick-up lines nevertheless her speech that afternoon remained interspersed with her signature polemics.  Miriam indeed never fails to both amaze and amuse her audience and political observers.  #pagalingpo

Debate is defined as a regulated discussion of a proposition between two matched sides (Merriam Webster).

There are different types of debates used in competitions.

The commonly-used type in scholastic debate competitions is the British Parliamentary debate.

Some debate topics are assigned on the spot, as well as your stand in the debate. Therefore, it is important to read on current events and know the pros and cons of most issues.

If debate topics are assigned beforehand, research both sides, not just your own. Knowing the pros and cons of an issue can help in anticipating the possible arguments of the other side. You could also anticipate the other side’s rebuttals of your own argument.

Good research also prevents panicking during a rebuttal. If you know your topic and arguments well, you will surely be able to back up your arguments.

It is very important to stick to your assigned roles in debate. Fulfillment of roles is necessary in winning a debate. Regardless of whether or not you agree with the stand you have been given, you must properly defend your arguments.

The opening government (pro-side) is usually tasked with the definition of terms used in the debate, as well as the boundaries the debate is set in.

For example, in the premise:

“This house believes that underage criminal offenders must be placed in usual correctional facilities along with other offenders.”
The opening government should set :
What age an offender is considered underage?
Is this premise set in the Philippines only? Asia? Worldwide?
What is considered a normal correctional facility?
However, the opening government must be careful in setting parameters to the debate. The premises must be realistic so as still to foster a healthy debate atmosphere.

Build on your argument first before moving on to your next argument. Focusing on 3 solid arguments is better than presenting 10 incoherent arguments.

Make sure to structure your speech well.

If your speech follows a rival speaker’s speech, state the rebuttals to his/her arguments first before proceeding to your own argument.

Debaters usually speak fast so as to be able to explain more points as possible. However, make sure that you speak audibly and clearly.

A well-modulated and well-enunciated voice can give an impression of confidence and makes your arguments seem even more believable.

No matter your assigned roles, it is important to take notes. This way, you could easily spot inconsistencies in the opposite side’s argument. You could also easily pair up the opposite side’s argument with your own rebuttals.

If debating is done by team, even if one has already presented arguments, take notes so that you help in building up your team member. You can point out ways he/she could strengthen his/her argument, as well as point out possible rebuttals he/she could use against the other side.

Use phrases such as “I strongly believe” to establish confidence in your own arguments.

If debating is done by team and you are the last one to present, summarize why your team did a better job of defending their side. In British Parliamentary debate, the “swing” (closing government/closing opposition) usually isn’t assigned to present arguments but rather to strengthen his/her side’s case. This is done by pointing out your arguments, stating how you countered the other side’s rebuttals, and pointing out your rebuttals to the other side’s arguments.
