Dimensions of development and levels of analysis (updated)

As Development Studies scholars, we look into the various dimensions of development and underdevelopment in order to provide us a holistic and an integrated perspective and analysis of  complex development issues and challenges.
These dimensions of development are the following:
Economic
Ideological and philosophical
Ethical
Political
Legal and constitutional
Administrative
Environmental
Technological
Socio-anthropological
Geographical
Cultural
Psycho-social
We also evaluate development in various levels of analysis, namely: community, institutional, regional, national, international and global.
It is in this context of studying the complex process of development and the reality of poverty that I enjoin our students to view and apply their learnings from all their courses in an integrative and dialectical manner.  Aside from the practicum, this academic training in the university is best complemented by active membership in socio-civic, development-oriented, and mass-oriented organizations.  Our training in development theorizing must undergo the rigid test of development practice.  It is only through this dialectical interaction that genuine, empowering and transformative education and development will take place.

jk22b trivia

- jk22b is short for John Katutubo, please hindi tutubi (dragonfly) : )
- I entitled it Diwang Palaboy because of its eclectic and random character.
- My first post was about the struggle of national minorities or katutubo.
- teridon.blogspot.com inspired me to start my own blog in 2004.
- I uploaded my first post in the computer room of Adamson University where I taught part-time before.
- My reflections about Diwang Palaboy blogging was published in the book "Before the Turning Point: Personal Stories of the University of the Philippines Manila" which was co-edited by Dr Abadingo and Dr Clavel.
- I continue blogging to maximize and extend my influence and contribution to social change, limited or small though it may be, and also to reach out to former students.
- I also encourage my students to blog.  A professor once said, "Ang pagsusulat ay isang porma ng paglaya."

Abnormal

We can't help but notice the very strong imprint of the dominant business discourse in UP's enrollment system given the recent adoption of various market-oriented terminologies such as the following:
- shopping cart
- invoice
- first come, first serve
- business hours (see the bottom part of your form 5)

"Wika ang daluyan ng kamalayan", as cultural activists would put it.  The worrisome introduction of these terms in our language and system will allow "market fundamentalism" to become a norm in an educational institution that should be first and foremost public and rights-based in character.  As a form of "creeping privatization", it will normalize and legitimize the growing trend of marketization and corporatization of education - at the expense of the social justice and equity imperative!

Dear recent graduates

Reminders
- application of development studies knowledge, skills and advocacies in whatever field you are now
- feedback about your new learning experience which we can integrate/incorporate in our lessons
- continuing education and professional development (formal and/or non-formal)
- criticism and self-criticism, reflection and reflexivity
- financial literacy

Taga-paglinang

"And being a DevStud student, being a "taga-paglinang" , I will not venture out of that firm resolve and crucial role. That I will be providing myself a bright future while giving even a brighter future to my country. I will stand up and stand tall for the many and not for the few for I’ve been a witness to their true conditions."

Subject-generated imagery

This alternative and empowering photo documentation technique is done by enabling your sector of study (e.g. indigenous people  or rural poor youth)  to also participate and assume responsibility in taking photos of themselves, their kapwa, as well as the material and non-material elements in their local communities from their own collective point of view and based on their value system as a group.

It is a sharp departure from the conventional and hegemonic practice of mainstream journalists and academic researchers who base their visual documentation practices involving other class, culture or social category on their ethnocentric, myopic, and bourgeois worldview, which by any measure and in all instances, do not reflect the actual collective sense of self, interests, and struggles of their sector of study.
