  • DS 121 - Paghandaan mabuti ang 2 pagsusulit (comprehension response and picture analysis)

P-Noy's SONA

P-Noy's SONA will again fail to trace the rootcauses of the long history of Philippine underdevelopment.  It will instead, just like in the past, focus on issues that are symptomatic only of deeper social problems.  This, by any measure, is political and intellectual dishonesty.

On sound foreign investment

  • Dr. Leonardo Estacio (Anthropology professor) = "Investing on green technologies with non-governmental organizations (NGO) and people's organizations (PO) to protect the environment and alleviate poverty."
  • Prof. Fatima Castillo (Political Science professor) = "That which brings real resources, honest in dealings, fair labor practice, transfers environmentally sound technology and pays correct taxes."
  • Prof. Roland Simbulan (Development Studies and Public Policy professor) = "A sound foreign investment policy allows only foreign investment in industries where we can really capture their technologies and use it for our own industries.  This is the strategic value of a sovereign foreign investment policy."
  • Prof. Erle Frayne Argonza (Sociology professor) = "Foreign direct investment or FDI should take primacy over portfolio investments.  FDI should be in manufacturing, infrastructure, agriculture and transportation and communications that truly create values more than rentier enterprises like realty and leisure for instance."
  • John Forbes (American Chamber of Commerce) = "One that creates jobs, transfers technology, and partners with the Filipino people in their search for a developed and inclusive economy."
  • Mike Wooton (Manila Times columnist) = "There are few areas which are open to FDI which would be a sound foreign investment.  BPO looks fairly sound but many other opportunities are risk-based which when added to the difficulties of doing business here make them unattractive."
  • Dr. Judy Taguiwalo (Community Development and Women Studies professor) = "Foreign investment in non-strategic areas of the economy, with clear technology transfer, regulated by government and only as supplement to economic self-reliance."
  • Prof. Jeremy De Jesus (Poverty researcher and Social Research professor) = "Investments on industries that are open to genuine technology transfer, manufacture products with higher value-added, and implement pro-employee labor policies."
  • Prof. Danilo Aragon (History professor) = "Investment in any industry of real mutual benefit."

Teaching

  • I have a scheduled lecture series to a group of teachers this week about Education and Social Change (Tuesday), and Creative Approaches to Cooperative Learning (Wednesday). I hope it will turn out to be a dynamic learning experience for me and the participants.
  • My teaching load this semester in UP covers six different but interrelated subjects (see previous post). And as part of my continued effort to discover unconventional learning approaches, I will re-institute the system of cross-reporting wherein students are assigned to report to another section or year level. The first attempt was carried out by the group of Padilla, Domagsang and Ciriaco while the second one was executed by the tandem of Bumanglang and Somera. Both groups covered financial literacy as subject matter.
  • Through text and e-mail, I consulted several DSS alumni about the set of specific job skills that they want to be incorporated/reinforced in the training of students. Here's the partial list:
-effective presentation, business plan writing, 5S (Ms. Reburiano)
-tariff analysis, position paper writing (Ms. Caranto)
-informative but laymanized newsletter writing (Mr. Tenorio)
-mock interviews (Ms. Bejasa)
-professional business correspondence writing, voice workshop (Ms. Gagarin)
-international business ethics, financial literacy (Ms. E. Buenaventura)
-forum organizing (Ms. Tayag)
-incident report writing (Mr. Mateo)
-round table discussion (Ms. Morano)
-briefer writing (Ms. M. Flores)
-focus group discussion, facilitating public fora (Ms. Galang)

BA Development Studies Briefer

Development Studies defined
Development Studies is a multi-disciplinary field of study that includes an understanding of the economic, political, social, technological and cultural aspects of social change especially in underdeveloped and developing countries. It contributes to policy-making by seeking solutions and strategies to address problems and obstacles to genuine human development. These issues are examined within a historical, comparative and international perspective, taking into account the countries' specific circumstances, history and culture (Simbulan, 2009).

Subjects in the curriculum include general education, foundations in Social Sciences, Politics and Governance, Economics of Development, Philippine Political Economy, International Political Economy, Project Planning and Management, Human Resource Development, and Development Research.  These subjects are handled with the use of various learning strategies such as lecture-discussion, public fora, field work, and cultural presentation, among others.

Career opportunities

Graduates of the course can find employment in government agencies or in international and local organizations which are concerned with development.  Examples of the employment possibilities for graduates are development research (e.g. NEDA, PIDS, IBON), policy formulation (Congress), project planning and implementation (UN, ADB), foreign service (DFA, FSO, CFO), banking and finance, media, and managerial positions dealing with development and community work (KMP, LGUs).  Graduates can also proceed to a career in law or join the teaching profession.

Faculty
The Development Studies Program currently has five (5) full-time and six (6) part-time faculty members in its roster.

The faculty members of the degree program have multidisciplinary background which is instrumental in providing the students with a holistic perspective in theorizing and practicing development work.

Prof. Roland Simbulan (Master in Public Administration - New York Univ)
Prof. Chester Arcilla (Doctor in Sociology - UP, ongoing)
Prof. Allan Joseph Mesina (Master in Environment Management and Development, Australia Nat'l Univ)

PracticumThe Practicum Program is a 6-unit course which involves  6-weeks of community immersion and organizing in marginalized rural communities.  It draw its strength from the sustained and dynamic partnership with mass-based people's organization in various peasant, fisherfolk and indigenous people communities.  It is guided by the paradigm that the dialectical interaction between the academe and the communties is critical to pro-people, nationalist and scientific development work and scholarship.
