Inputs (DSS Week ACLE on Aklas-Sining, February 5)

  • Aklas-sining (translation: protest art)
  • Protest song is one of the many ways to show one's
    indignation to social injustices/social problems.
These social injustices include sexism, elitism, racism, etc.
  • Naomi Klein, a staunch anti-globalization activist, attacked the
"Bono-isation" of protest against poverty and underdevelopment.
She argued that the involvement of celebrities such as Bono
reduced activism to a much safer terrain.
Bono of U2 is an advocate of development in the African continent.
"It was the stadium rock model of protest," she said as
she considered it less dangerous (to the power wielders)
and less powerful than mass-based street protests.
  • Some examples of protest songs include:
-Bob Dylan's Blowin' in the Wind
-Gary Granada's Dam, Address and Bahay
-Joey Ayala's Wala nang Tao sa Sta. Filomena
    -Bob Marley's Redemption Song
    -Dicta License's Ang Ating Araw
-Morrissey's America is not the world
