Militarizing the bureaucracy

  • rewarding compliant retirees from the state's security forces
  • preventing well-qualified and well-meaning civilians from occupying key positions
  • buying political loyalty
  • building a firewall against any coup attempt, people power or combination
  • laying the ground for military rule (?)

Planadong kahirapan

Widening activism

Jojo : Mahusay kang organisador.

Chronocentrism?

"You should vote for those who are young so that
there would be a change in our country's political landscape.
For so long a time, our president comes from one sector, from one age.
If we will do that again, the result will be the same."

-Sen. Chiz Escudero responding to a student's query
on what criteria to consider in choosing a candidate

original composition, 4-5 stanzas, Filipino, 2 copies, submission: Feb. 18

Maternal Health

"Ten to eleven Filipino mothers die each day while giving birth.
This will not happen if the public health system is sufficiently able to provide
reproductive health services to our people, especially the women.
No mother should be allowed to die while giving life.
The State can't afford to close its eyes to the high maternal mortality rate.
Allowing the high MMR to continue would be like committing a crime against our own people."

-Sen. Pia Cayetano
Chair, Senate Committee on Social Justice, Welfare and Rural Development

* * *

"Maternal health refers to the health of women
during pregnancy, childbirth and the postpartum period.
While motherhood is often a positive and fulfilling experience,
for too many women it is associated with suffering, ill-health and even death."

-World Health Organization (WHO)
http://www.who.int/topics/maternal_health/en/

Law and Corruption

"Corruption can also mean the manipulation of or circumventing the law to serve one's interest,
usually one's personal monetary gain. But this does not necessarily mean that there is no corruption
when the procedures of law are followed, or things are done the “legal” way,
because the laws themselves could also be products of corruption."

"Aspaltadong Mukha"

  • "Every response should be faithfully recorded, correctly assembled and tabulated, and openly reported by the survey institutions," kanyang pagbibigay-diin.

    Over-analyzing surveys
Wika nga ni John Nery, "I am wary of placing more weight on the survey results than they can (or were designed to) bear."

Pitfall of idealism

"There is this case of a doctor lecturing about sanitation and the consequence when people do not wash their hands before eating, when people do not wash themselves properly and regularly. Yet the audience they lecture to have no regular supply of clean water."

-Jose Ma. Montelibano
Columnist, PDI

"We are not ready for overnight candidacies," giit niya.
Ayon kay G. Nery, "He needs to hurdle an invisible barrier: No bachelor will win the presidency in a famously family-oriented polity."
