Ill-motivated politicians resort to electoral violence as an effective strategy to intimidate and eliminate present (as well as future) contenders for the coveted positions. The terror that this inflicts upon the society creates a wrong notion that electoral politics is an unworthy arena of competition for other well-meaning challengers. In the process, local politics becomes an exclusive domain of political warlords and dynasties.
